Using Group Coupons to Boost your Investments

Investment property owners have even more of an incentive than traditional homeowners to find ways to save money on household appliances, cleaning services and handyman services: every dollar they save can be another dollar of profit that can be used toward the next property.

A proliferation of “group coupon” companies in areas across the United States is providing deep discounts for a variety of goods and services. Here’s how it works: consumers sign up for emails or simply regularly visit a website that offers discount coupons based on the number of coupons sold. Local businesses reap the benefit of extra advertising and bringing in business from those who purchase the coupons. The risk to businesses is reduced because the coupons are only available once a certain minimum number of coupons are purchased.

While many of the coupons are for restaurants or spa services that are unrelated to homeownership, others are available for the local hardware store, cleaning services, painters and other contractors.

Groupon.com launched the idea and is available in more than 40 U.S. cities, but plenty of other companies also offer discount coupons.

Angie’s List, the nation’s premier provider of consumer reviews on local doctors and service providers, has jumped into group couponing with ‘The Big Deal’.

“We’ve actually been doing this for 15 years. What’s different now is how these coupons are presented,” Angie Hicks, founder of Angie’s List said. “The Big Deal coupons offer incredible savings and like our traditional coupons, they’ll be offered only by companies that have first earned great grades from Angie’s List members. So you’re not getting just a great price – you’re getting quality service, too.”

The Big Deal has been offered on a test basis in Indianapolis, Chicago and Washington D.C. for the past month. Examples of those deals include:

  • 55 % off carpet cleaning in Indianapolis
  • 65 % off from a Chicago painter
  • 58 % off a massage in Washington D.C.
  • 80 % off a dental exam from an Indianapolis dentist

“Our motto is ‘We screen; you save,’” Hicks said. “Unlike most of our services, we’re offering these Big Deals to non-members as well as members. Members save more, but the great savings from great companies are open to everyone.”
The Big Deal will be available in 25 cities this month and 50 by July. Announcements of The Big Deal will be made through the Angie’s List Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as in e-mails to members and on the company’s website (AngiesList.com).
Every investor should be looking for ways to save money and find the best service providers for their property.
